New Delhi: The International Hockey Federation (IHF) is set to launch World League that will also be the new qualification process for the World Cup and Olympic Games, with the final of the inaugural season to be played in India.
Speaking at a press conference during the Olympic qualifiers being played here, the IHF President Leandro Negre and CEO Kelly Fairweather gave details of the tournament that will begin after the London Olympics in August this year.
"There are about 80 men and 58 women teams that have shown the desire to compete. The competition will also be a qualifier for the Olympics and the World Cup," revealed Negre, adding, "Eight top teams from the League will join the top-eight FIH teams to play the finals."
"The first men's final of the FIH World League will be held in India in February 2014. The women's final will be hosted by Argentina in December 2013," CEO Fairweather added to the President's statement.
According to the FIH press release, from 2014, the host, five continental champions and 6-7 teams from the FIH World League will play the World Cup and Olympics.
