Nithin, 22, who lost one half of his face following a bike accident, underwent a successful facial reconstruction surgery at Medical Trust Hospital here on Friday.
The hospital authorities said that the operation, which can be considered as rarest of the rare, would not have been possible had there been no team work.
Nithin, a welder from Changanassery, met with an accident on May 21 at Pulikkattupadi Junction there when as his bike collided with a car. Dr K G Bhaskara, head of the Plastic, Cosmetic and Reconstruction Surgery Department, said that there were fractures all over the victim’s body.
“Nithin underwent an immediate microvascular surgery - replantation of avulsed face, tracheostomy for lung injury and orthopaedic procedure to fix his fractured leg,” he said. Dr Sachin Tendulkar and Dr Vinayak of the microvascular surgical team, consultant ENT surgeon Dr Mathew Dominic, Dr V M Khaleel and Dr K Vinodan were also part of the team of surgeons.
