Mumbai: The death toll in the Diva-Sawantwadi passenger train accident on Sunday has risen to 21 while 128 others have been injured. The Diva-Sawantwadi passenger train got derailed near Nagothane in the Raigad district of Maharashtra on Sunday.
The damaged bogeys were cleared from the tracks on Monday morning and services on the Konkan line are set to resume. On Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan met the injured.
The Railway Ministry announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the families of the deceased passengers, Rs 50,000 to those grievously injured and Rs 10,000 to the passengers who sustained minor injuries.
The crowded coaches of the Diva-Sawantwadi train jumped the tracks along with the engine around 10 am on Sunday. The police said that the incident occurred in a tunnel near Nidi village between Nagothane and Roha railway stations.
The incident comes just days after a bomb blast was triggered in the Chennai railway station last week. In an another incident, eight bogies of a passenger train had derailed near Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh on April 28, 2014.
