New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Justice PD Dinakaran wants to defend himself after allegations were levelled against him for being involved in financial fraud.
Dinakaran on Tuesday requested Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan to appoint a three-member panel to investigate all allegations levelled against him.
The move comes after the CJI told him that once the inquiry is on he cannot officiate court proceedings.
Dinakaran is currently facing impeachment after 76 Opposition MPs in Rajya Sabha moved a notice to impeach him.
The MPs on Monday submitted a petition to Rajya Sabha Chairman Hamid Ansari for impeaching Justice Dinakaran.
The Judge has been accused of land-grabbing and amassing wealth beyond his known sources of income.
Dinakaran’s promotion to the Supreme Court has also been put on hold after the Central Government returned the file recommending his promotion. The Supreme Court collegium is yet to take a decision on it.
In independent India, only once has an impeachment motion against a senior judge been put to vote. The motion against Supreme Court Justice V Ramaswamy in 1992-93 was defeated.
