Jaipur: At least 10 people were killed when police opened fire to disperse Gujjars who allegedly torched a police station in Sikandra in Dausa district of Rajasthan on Saturday.
This takes the total death toll in Gujjar-police clashes to 22. Sixteen people were killed in Bayana town on Friday. The Gujjars are demanding that they be included in the Scheduled Tribes list so that their community gets more reservation in government posts and educational institutes.
Protestors in Bayana town lined the bodies of those killed in police firing along the Delhi-Mumbai railway line and blocked the Delhi-Jaipur highway in Behror.
At least six districts have been declared “tense” because of the Gujjar agitation. As many as 17 army columns have been called to help the civil administration in maintaining law and order in the affected districts.
The state government on Friday imposed orders prohibiting gathering of more than four people at a time and tightened security measures in six of the districts, including Jaipur.
Gujjar leader KS Bainsla, along with hundreds of his supporters, was squatting on the rail track near Dhumaria station, close to Bayana town. Bainsla heads the Gujjar Sangharsh Aarakshan Samiti, which had called for the 'rail roko andolan' - rail blockade.
The violence has forced the BJP to shift its National Executive meeting from Jaipur to Delhi. The three-day Executive, scheduled to begin from May 31 in Jaipur, will now be would be on June 1, 2 in Delhi.
The Railways have suspended 17-trains and diverted 29-trains in the Western Railway Region. The Nizamuddin-Ahmedabad, Nizamudding-Mumbai Central, Nizamuddin-Kota Express, Niamuddin-Udaipur Express and Nizamudding-Indore Intercity Express are some of the trains have been suspended.
