Cyber security is not the responsibility of the government alone but that of each citizen as well, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said here on Friday while inaugurating Cocon 2012, the international cyber security and policing conference.

‘’With the government functioning becoming more and more digitalised, the dangers of cyber attacks and cyber crimes are on the rise. Hence, cyber security is a matter of great concern to the government and to the police,’’ the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister said that with the proliferation of computers around the world, cyber crimes in general and those targetting women were on the rise and there was an urgent need to tackle the menace.

He said that if the social networking sites were not used carefully, it could have disastrous consequences on younger generation.

Every individual and parent needs to be educated on the safety steps to be taken while using these social networking sites, Chandy said.  Home Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, who presided over the function, said that the popularity of the social networking sites had made the public more vulnerable in the digital world and added that women were mostly the targets of these crimes.  Minister for Industries and IT P K Kunhalikutty, Principal Secretary (Home) Sajan Peter among others spoke.

DGP Jacob Punnoose delivered the welcome speech and ADGP Training A Hemachandran porposed a vote of thanks.

The conference, participated by top police officials of various states and of national investigating agencies, and cyber security and IT experts, will conclude on Saturday.
