4 cops including the SHO of the police station has been charged of murder.

Kanpur: A man was allegedly beaten to death at a police station in Hanspuram locality in Kanpur on Sunday, triggering protest by locals who vandalised the police station and torched vehicles parked outside it.

Four policemen including the SHO of the police station, who are absconding, have been suspended and a case of murder is being registered against them on the basis of a complaint lodged by the son of the deceased, SP (crime) O P Singh said.

Jang Bahadur, who had been summoned to the police station for interrogation in connection with a theft case, fainted soon after he reached there and later died at a hospital, he said.

However, Jang Bahadur's kin allege that he was badly beaten up by the police causing his death, the SP said.

As the news of Jang Bahadur's death spread, an angry mob stormed the police station, vandalised it and set three motor cycles parked outside it on fire.

Jang Bahadur's body has been sent for a post-mortem, he said.
