THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: “Even if we want to go to our neighbour’s house, we depend on vehicles. We are not bothered about the grave consequences of Chrolofluorocarbon emitted by vehicles. Usage of AC and refrigerators has been increasing the width of the hole in the Ozone layer. It helps ultraviolet rays to enter earth directly and cause skin diseases”- these words are from Neethu G S, a Plus-Two student and student coordinator of the Ozone Day celebrations at the Government Model Higher Secondary School, Pattom."Around 350 posters were made by students on the importance of shielding earth from ultraviolet rays. All the students participated in different competitions conducted by the school. It is the first time that we are conducting the programme on a large scale,’’ said Nishi K A, staff coordinator of the programme. “We planted several saplings at the nearby LIC office. These saplings will remain forever and provide shade to pedestrians,” explained Nishi.“Students can bring changes in the society,’’ said N Retna Kumar, Principal of the school. “We did not expect this programme to become such as a big hit. Students understood the dire consequences of the depletion of the Ozone layer. So, they took the initiative for organising a programme titled Ozone Day 2011.” said Retna Kumar.“We should protect earth and our resources for posterity. It is our responsibility. Ozone Day celebration reminds us of the need to protect earth,” said Megha Rao, a Plus-One student.Painting and essay competitions were held on the occasion. Gifts were distributed to the winners of the different competitions. The programme was organised by the school’s Ecoclub in association with the NSS unit.
