Gen Z employees are known for their candid and sometimes surprising reasons for taking leave from work. Whether it’s to get a haircut, look after a sick pet mouse, take care of a depressed cat or just because they’re feeling lazy, these young employees don’t shy away from sharing their true needs. Jamie Lynch, a Millennial boss, has shared some of these unique and humorous excuses on Instagram. Her posts have resonated with social media users, particularly other managers who find the clips both relatable and entertaining.
However, Lynch shared that some of her staff are not thrilled with the public attention, as some are upset by the negative comments they are getting. Speaking about her employees, she told Newsweek, “They have very strong personal boundaries when it comes to their wellbeing. I respect this about them because when I was their age, my managers would tell me I was fired if I called in sick. Sometimes they are hard to motivate, and they call in for crazy reasons, but they are fun and give us a fresh perspective. I am also a little jealous of their personal boundaries, I still haven’t used a vacation day this year as I am so dedicated to my job."
Reacting to the post, a user wrote, “I’m not saying I agree with these younger people’s perceptions on things. But the older generation that is making fun of them is the same generation that raised these people."
Another shared, “Why do you have to explain why you want a day off? If the employee has days off left and it is asked according to the company’s policy, I don’t see why you should disclose the reason for your day off."
“She is letting them off too easy. They don’t respect her or the workplace. She should give them all a warning and that next time they are fired," a comment read.
Another wrote, “She has the patience of a saint. I won’t deal with that nonsense."
An individual shared, “It’s really shocking how they just don’t go to work because they have other priorities that day. Get fired, which doesn’t even faze them. Get another job, and do the same thing. It’s weird behaviour."
One more added, “The way she handles her team needs a round of applause. It’s like she’s dealing with 5-year-olds and still she’s able to maintain her calm is cute."
The Millennial manager noted that her videos have garnered substantial positive feedback, with many viewers sharing similar experiences with their own employees. She remains motivated to create more content, appreciating the unique energy Gen Z workers bring to the workplace. While their unconventional leave requests provide plenty of laughs, she values the fresh perspective they offer and the fun atmosphere they help create, enhancing her team’s dynamics.
