The West Indies fast-bowler, Shannon Gabriel officially announced his retirement from international cricket. The pacer has been part of the international set-up for the Men in Maroon for 12 years, taking part in 86 games across all three formats.
The 36-year-old has primarily made his mark in the Test format where he has played in a total of 59 games representing the West Indies. He racked up a total of 166 Test wickets at an average of 32.21. While he has been part of the white-ball set-up, he hasn’t been able to make a significant impact in the shorter formats of the game.

The pacer officially confirmed his decision through an Instagram post. He posted a long and heartfelt note on his handle where he thanked many people for their contributions in his journey.
He wrote, “During the past 12 years, I have dedicated myself to playing international cricket for the West Indies. Playing this beloved game at the highest level has brought me immense joy, but as the saying goes, all good things must come to an end”.

“Today l am announcing my retirement from international cricket,” he added.
The pacer was grateful for the opportunities handed to him by the West Indies Cricket Board and also hailed the many members of the backroom staff that aided him during his time with the national team.
“Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to God for the numerous blessings and the opportunities my family and I have received during my time playing for the West Indies. Secondly, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Cricket West Indies administrators, coaches, and staff members. Words cannot adequately convey the appreciation I have for your hard work and support over the years. Last but not least, I am grateful to my teammates and all those who have stood by me and supported me along the way. You have made my journey to the top truly special,” he mentioned.

As for his plans following his retirement, Shannon still plans on playing club and franchise cricket across the globe and also representing his country in a non-playing role should the opportunity present itself. He has represented the St Lucia Zouks, Barbados Tridents and the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League. He has also been part of English county sides like Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Yorkshire as well.
Gabriel’s finest performance with the ball came in during the Test against England in 2020 where he ran through the English top-order in the first innings followed by the clean-up job with the tailenders in the second innings to give the West Indies the Test victory in Southampton.
He concluded by saying, “Moving forward, my plan is to continue representing my country, club, and franchise teams around the world with the same love and passion 1 have shown throughout my career”.
