KARIMNAGAR: An ancient Buddhist stupa, located 40 kilomteres away from the district headquarters between Dulikatta and Vadakapur villages, is lying in a sorry state.
The northeast portion of the stupa has been damaged four days ago by unidentified miscreants who dug it up to unearth hidden treasure. Not many are aware of this ancient stupa as it lies in an isolated place where there is no proper means of communication.
It lacks proper road connectivity and power supply. Buddhist monks visit the stupa and offer prayers on special occasions during the year. This Buddhist stupa, believed to date back 2,000 years ago during the Satavahana era and said to be older than the Amaravathi stupa, lacks security and is completely neglected by the Archeology department. However, the archaeology department officials Bhanumurthy, Narender Rao and Nagaiah visited the stupa on Wednesday and inspected the site. They found that the persons who damaged the historical structure were part of professional gang. According to Nagendra Sharma, there is no security guard on duty, no sign boards to guide visitors. Meanwhile, Telangana Jagruthi district unit led by district unit convener T Tirupati Rao visited the damaged Buddhist structure on Tuesday. He demanded the government to turn it into a tourism spot and save it from being in ruins. "If visitors increase, it will automatically be protected," he opined.
