New Delhi: On the concluding day of the BJP national executive in Lucknow on Sunday, Leader of the Opposition LK Advani made a rather controversial statement about the Prime Minister. "Manmohan Singh has no importance as a Prime Minister," he said.
Speaking of the 7/11 serial blasts in Mumbai, Advani pointed out that the Prime Minister had committed that India will not hold any form of dialogue with Pakistan.
"The UPA Government even declared publicly that Pakistan was responsible for the blasts. However, on his visit to Havana, the Prime Minister said that Pakistan was also a victim of terrorism and spoke of a Joint Mechanism to counter terrorism," Advani added.
He took a dig at Manmohan Singh for not defining the Government's stand on the Kashmir issue. "Manmohan Singh had welcomed the four-point formula proposed by President Musharraf. We haven't been able to understand what the four-point formula stands for. Does it mean the joint administration of Jammu and Kashmir? We will never accept it," he said.
"The UPA Government is in the process of striking a big compromise on the Jammu and Kashmir issue and if we are not alert, they will succeed," Advani added.
Senior leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee and party president Rajnath Singh were among others who spoke on the occassion. Rajnath Singh said that party members should work towards gaining a stronghold not only in the BJP-ruled states, but in other states as well.
Vajpayee said, "We should keep in mind that the Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh are not only important at the state level, but also at the national level. It should be our prime concern to bring BJP to power in the state."
He said that Indian politics should rise above petty issues and function in the interest of the common man. "It is not a question of coming or power or only gaining votes, we have to change our thinking and work for the development," Vajpayee added.
He also appealed to the people of Uttar Pradesh to change with the times and prepare themselves accordingly.
