Following a disappointing outing in the Africa Cup Of Nations tournament with Cameroon, Andre Onana is reportedly contemplating his international career.
This follows Onana’s rift with Cameroonian legend Samuel Eto’o and an abysmal season at Manchester United.
Onana played only one game out of a possible four for Cameroon at the Cup of Nations after losing his spot on the starting XI after a disastrous 1-3 defeat to Senegal in the group stage. On top of it all, Cameroon fell to Nigeria in the last 16 as well, resulting in them exiting the tournament.
Now, the Daily Mail claims the 27-year-old’s lack of game time and an ongoing rift with Cameroon FA president Samuel Eto’o may convince him to quit international football for the second time in just over 12 months.
This is not the first time news of a rift between the two have arisen. In fact, Eto’o, who was elected as the Cameroon Football Federation President in 2021, has had a number of arguments with Onana and the player was sent home for disciplinary issues at the 2022 World Cup.
Initially, Onana had announced his international retirement after he was kicked out of Cameroon’s FIFA World Cup 2022 training camp in Qatar, owing to a disagreement with Eto’o and manager Rigobert Song. Then, in retort, Onana retired from international duty before being recalled, yet he has since been further accused of disrespecting his national team after arriving at AFCON late in order to minimise the Manchester United games he missed.
“There doesn’t appear to be any change in Andre Onana’s feud with Cameroon FA president Samuel Eto’o. It’s said they haven’t spoken since the World Cup in Qatar, and their relationship is broken and irreconcilable,” stated the Daily Mail report.
On the domestic front as well, Onana has had a turbulent season so far, to say the least.
Onana has had a tough time since completing a £47.2 million ($59.9m) move from Inter Milan to Manchester United last summer, with the stopper failing to impress on multiple occasion throughout the season, as United themselves undergo a dismal season.
