Ricky Ponting, who served as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League for the last seven seasons, left the franchise in July. During his time, DC reached the IPL final for the first and only time in the 2020 season but failed to win the trophy. In the last three seasons, the Delhi Capitals finished outside of the top four in the league table and didn’t manage to qualify for the playoffs.
After his stint as head coach came to an end, the former Australian skipper provided a big update about his successor. In a video uploaded by the ICC on Instagram on Saturday, Ponting said that DC is looking to appoint an Indian as head coach.
“What you’ll find is that they’ll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. Certainly, that’s some of the dialogue that I’ve had with them anyway,” Ponting said.

The two-time ODI World Cup-winning captain, who won the IPL title as head coach of the Mumbai Indians in 2015, also explained the reason why he parted ways with the Delhi Capitals. According to him, DC wanted a head coach who could spend more time in India during the off-season, but it wasn’t possible for him to do so because of other commitments.
“They made it pretty clear that they wanted to head in a different direction with someone that could give them a bit more time and a bit more availability through the off-season. More than anything, to be able to spend a bit more time in India with a lot of the local players. I just couldn’t do that with the other stuff that I’ve got going on,” Ponting said.
The all-time leading run scorer for Australia in Tests and ODIs, who played for KKR and MI in the IPL, has, however, expressed his desire to coach again in the IPL.
“I’d love to coach again in the IPL. I’ve had a great time every year that I’ve been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there,” he said.
“I’ve had seven seasons at Delhi, which unfortunately didn’t really work out the way that I would have wanted and certainly the way that the franchise would have wanted.”
“Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team, and that didn’t happen,” he added.
