Kuldeep, who is arguably India’s best spinner across all formats over the past year, was not in action in any capacity during the group stage in the USA, being benched for all matches.
But, now, he has found utility as a wily operator on the spin-friendly tracks in the Caribbean and has taken the Caribbean by storm with his menacing spin.
Kuldeep has already taken five wickets in the two games he has been part of, including a three-wicket haul against Bangladesh on Saturday, when he shone the brightest.
When asked about whether the experience he gathered playing in small spin-friendly stadiums such as the Chinnaswamy and Feroz Shah Kotla helped him prepare for the pitches in the West Indies, Kuldeep immediately stated that the pressure that playing in a World Cup far outweigh that of the IPL and hence, the experiences cannot translate over the same way.
“IPL is totally different, boss. I’ll let you know – that it’s totally different. What you experience in IPL is not what you are experiencing in T20 World Cup,” stated Kuldeep.
Obviously when most of the guys played in (Feroz Shah) Kotla, the smallest ground in India, the wicket helps there for spinners. And yes, sometimes you get the bigger boundary. It’s very nice to have that in your favour,” added Kuldeep.
For Kuldeep though, it wasn’t merely the dimensions and nature of the pitches that mattered the most, but rather being able to focus on one’s own length according to their opposition that holds the highest priority when preparing for a World Cup.
“But at the same time, for any spinners around the globe, the length matters a lot. And especially in this format, you have to read what the batter are trying to do, but more aggressive, the approach should be like very – very aggressive. So that is actually helping me during IPL and it’s actually helping me in T20 World Cup.”
