Fish farming is one of the most profitable businesses, giving big returns to the farmers. Not many find the scope in this farming and tend to do organic farming. But, Ashutosh Kumar Singh in Patwara village of Banka district, didn’t follow the herd and decided to invest his time, labour and money in fish farming. Today, he is earning more than Rs 25 lakh annually. He built five ponds in 15 bighas and started breeding fish in them. Ashutosh Kumar Singh has been in fish farming for the last ten years.
Ashutosh Kumar Singh was unemployed once. He was not earning any money. After learning the basics of fish farming, he decided to breed fish in a land of 15 bighas. He did not take any training and suffered high losses initially. After facing the setback, he took online training and started fish farming from scratch. In his five ponds, Ashutosh Kumar Singh rears Silan, IMC Rohu, Katla and Mrigal fishes.
Ashutosh says that there is a lot of profit in farming Silan and Indian Major Carp (IMC) fishes. It costs around Rs 80-90 to rear 1 kg of Silan fish. IMC Rohu fish takes 13 months to breed whereas Seelan fish gets ready in 7 to 8 months for sale. Silan fish is sold for Rs 110. IMC breed fish is sold for Rs 250 per kg.
While talking about the precautionary measures for fish farming, the farmer Ashutosh Kumar Singh said that the lime should be used in the pond at the rate of 15 kg per acre at an interval of 15 days. To protect the fish from infection, he advises to use 400 grams of potassium permanganate per acre. “You can also use water sanitiser 500 milligrams per acre,” he added.
If the pond water turns too green, then you must stop using lime and chemical fertilisers. He suggests using 800 grams of copper sulphate by dissolving it in water. To protect the fish from fungal disease, 5-10 grams of salt should be mixed in per kg of supplementary feed. The farmers should feed the supplementary food to fish for one week continuously in a month. Ashutosh Kumar says that along with fish farming, he also sells fish seeds and does agriculture.
