Promise Day: History

It is widely believed that the holiday has its roots in Lupercalia, an ancient Roman festival. This festival was held from February 13 to February 15 in celebration of fertility and the coming of spring. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as St. Valentine’s Day. This was an attempt to replace the pagan celebration of Lupercalia with a Christian one.

While there were multiple saints named Valentine throughout history, it is not entirely clear which one Pope Gelasius was referring to. While some believe this holiday is named after a saint who was martyred in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II, others believe Pope Gelasius was referring to a bishop of Terni who was also martyred in Rome.

Over time, especially in the Middle Ages, this day evolved into a celebration of love and romance. Since then the exchanging of love letters and gifts has become increasingly popular for expressing love and affection.
