National and Regional special envoys to Afghanistan are set to convene a two-day meeting in Doha on Sunday

The Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday announced that its representatives would not attend the upcoming meeting in Doha.

National and Regional special envoys to Afghanistan are set to convene a two-day meeting in Doha on Sunday. This is the second UN meeting of its kind in less than a year.

The meeting is a follow-up to talks held in Doha in May 2023, to which no Afghans were invited. But this time, both Afghan civil society members and the Taliban authorities have been invited to the upcoming meeting.

The Taliban group in its statement cited the United Nations’ failure to accept their conditions to be the reason behind their absence from the meeting. The group is upset due to the freeze of aid to the conflicted regions and demands more relief

The purpose of this meeting, hosted by the United Nations, is to put everyone who is an immediate responder to Afghanistan on the same page

On the other side, the world community wants relaxation for women and children’s rights in Afghanistan

This statement will be a cause of concern for the UN and other countries according to highly placed sources in the Taliban government.

On Saturday, the foreign ministry said it had reiterated its conditions to the United Nations.

“If the Islamic Emirate is to participate as the sole official representative of Afghanistan and if there exists an opportunity to hold frank talks between the Afghan delegation and the UN about all issues on a very senior level, then participation would be beneficial,” a ministry statement said.
