A pack of dogs mauled to death a mother of three as she tried to save her three children and herself in the US state of Georgia. The incident happened at a bus stop behind the Brooks County Middle School in Quitman. Quitman is 370 kilometres away from the state capital Atlanta.
The dogs descended on the family as they waited at the bus stop, Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said, according to the New York Post. The woman, Courtney Williams, 35, was found dead in a nearby yard.
“When deputies arrived, they encountered several aggressive dogs on the property,” the GBI said.
Authorities rushed the children to the hospital with injuries. Her son suffered several lacerations from fighting the dogs as he was trying to save his little sister’s life.
“Kayden pushed (his sister) out of harm’s way (but) by doing so he saved her but took on the dogs himself,” Williams’ sister-in-law Crystal Cox said on Facebook. She also shared a series of photos, all of which were graphic in nature, showing the deep wounds the boy suffered to his arms and legs.
The other child quickly rushed into the school as the dogs attacked his family and alerted a man who rushed out to help fight the dogs off the boy and rushed them to the hospital.
The eldest son was “hurt pretty bad”, his aunt said. She said that all three are now recovering at her home.
Neighbours told local news media outlets that they are unsure what breed of dogs attacked the family but said that they have asked authorities to bring animal control officials to the area for some time.
“People dump dogs all over the county and no one can get help with them because there’s no county animal control. Praying for this woman’s family. This is so sad,” one resident told the local news outlet WALB.
”I do feel for the family and for the kids because now they are going to have to celebrate Mother’s Day without their mother,” another local said, lamenting the death of the mother ahead of Mother’s Day. The GBI is conducting an autopsy to determine William’s official cause of death.
