Nepal: The wreckage of a US military helicopter that went missing while delivering aid in quake-hit Nepal has been found near the Chinese border, the Nepalese army said Friday.

"We don't know if there are any survivors, we have yet to confirm that. We have sighted the wreckage from the air, we are now trying to land in the area and get more information," Major General Binoj Basnet told by telephone.

The aircraft is part of Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 469.

The US helicopter was delivering aid in Dolakha, one of the districts hit hardest by both quakes, on Tuesday when it went missing with six Marines and two Nepali soldiers on board. The Marine Corps UH-1Y Huey helicopter lost radio contact after its crew was heard talking about fuel problems.

Earlier 7.3 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday killed at least 68 people and spread panic in Nepal, bringing down buildings already weakened by a devastating tremor less than three weeks ago and unleashing landslides in Himalayan valleys near Mount Everest.

The new earthquake was centred 76 km (47 miles) east of the capital in a hilly area close to the border with Tibet, according to coordinates provided by the US Geological Survey.

Nepal is still reeling from April's devastating earthquake that killed more than 8,000 people and injured close to 20,000.
