A tiny playable Rubik’s Cube has been making headlines, captivating puzzle enthusiasts and collectors with its miniature marvel and hefty price tag. Japanese toymaker MegaHouse, a subsidiary of Tokyo-based toymaker Bandai Co, crafted a fully functional six-sided puzzle that’s so small that you might need tweezers to solve it. Yes, take time to picture that.
Whether you’re a puzzle enthusiast or a collector, this miniature marvel will leave you amazed. Made from aluminium, this minuscule cube measures a mere 0.19 inches on each side, making it barely visible to the naked eye. The rotating puzzle cube weighs 0.33 grams, or 0.01 ounces.
According to the MegaHouse website, this tiny cube is made of “ultra-precision metal.” Despite its size, the cube retains the same intricate mechanism and turning capabilities as a standard-sized Rubik’s Cube.
If you are interested in taking this collectible home, it’s on sale in Japan for 777,777 yen (approximately Rs 4 lakh). The Rubik’s Cube is currently available for pre-order on the company’s website, with shipping expected by April next year. Each order comes with a stand, certifying it as the “world’s record smallest Rubik’s cube.”
In a video on the MegaHouse website, Kiyokazu Saito, president of Iriso Precision, the company used for precision cutting, said, “The 5-millimetre Rubik’s Cube is the result of the trinity of machines, cutting tools, and players’ passion.”
The company started to conceptualise the miniature cube four years ago and began the process to create it in 2022, CNN reported.
In August, the miniature cube was officially billed as the world’s “smallest rotating puzzle cube” by the Guinness World Records.
The launch of the world’s smallest Rubik’s cube coincides with the 50th anniversary of the original Rubik’s cube, aka Magic Cube.
The Rubik’s Cube is a 3D combination puzzle that was invented by Hungarian sculptor and architecture professor Erno Rubik in the 1970s. The playable puzzle was originally called the Magic Cube. Erno Rubik granted Ideal Toy Corp the license to sell magic cubes, after which a US company turned it into a hit product in the 1980s.
In the first two years, more than 100 million Rubik’s Cubes were sold worldwide. Furthermore, it became an instant hit in Japan, with over 4 million magic cubes sold in the first eight months after its release in July 1980.
