It is hard to see people not honking on roads every few minutes. Gautam Pandey, a native of Rambagh, Purnia district, Bihar has proved to be an exception. According to Local 18 Bihar, Gautam has been driving without honking horns since 2019. He earlier used to work as an engineer in the United Nations and has now retired from the service. The Bihar-based native said he enjoys travelling far and wide in the car without blowing horns. According to him, people need to change some of their habits while driving.
Gautam’s decision to reinstate from using horns in cars dates back to 2018 when he was standing at a bus stand. Within an hour, he felt bored due to the loud, high-pressure sounds of the horns from the vehicles. At that moment, Gautam vowed never to use horns while driving any vehicle. Since that day, he tried driving a car without blaring any horns, which has slowly become a part of his lifestyle and has continued since.
Gautam then talked about the harmful side-effects of honking horns, that is noise pollution. He said that noise pollution can lead to hearing ailments and mental health issues in people, especially pregnant women and newborn children. According to Gautam, humans need a sound of at least 50 decibels to hear anything. He said that amplifying this sound limit by blowing the horns can increase the risk of noise pollution. As per the Bihar-based native, every individual should make efforts to save the environment from damage caused by noise pollution. He said that human’s first duty is toward the environment since it has bestowed us with all the resources. Gautam said that everyone should have utmost concern for the environment.
According to Gautam, people have become habitual regarding honking horns, and keep blowing them unnecessarily. He said that this creates problems for others. He said that everyone should stop honking horns in some places. In this way, he said that people will be able to minimise noise pollution to some extent in a few places. Gautam said that it will serve twin purposes, not giving discomfort to fellow travellers, and lessening noise pollution.
