Some of the largest companies like Apple, Amazon, Tesla, and Intel are undergoing mass lay-offs. As a result, many employees with years of experience and impressive achievements are losing their jobs overnight. Recently, a Pakistani-origin woman who worked for over three years in Tesla as the Interoperability Lead on its Global Charging Team took to LinkedIn to pen an emotional note about losing her hard-earned job. Bisma Rehman, who has a M.Sc. from Brown University, wrote that all 500+ people from her team were laid off. She described her work experience at Tesla as highly encouraging and positive.
She mentioned that the Tesla Charging Team “poured their heart and soul" into developing charging technology that was beneficial not just for Tesla drivers but for the whole EV market. She praised her team members for empowering her to do the “best work" of her career. Bisma wrote that leaving her job was tough on her and said, “Very hard to let go of people who were so dedicated to the mission, solving the hardest problems and making the seemingly impossible happen; inspiring me to do better every day." She hoped that her contribution to the automotive company would be remembered and said, “Even though I am not at Tesla anymore, my face will stay on the Tesla website to remind me of what we achieved together, as I find my next challenge to work on."
Her post ended with the hashtag “Open To Work". Bisma got a ton of supportive messages, with people wishing her success in her future endeavours. Her former colleague, William Navarro Jameson who was the Strategic Charging Programs Lead at Tesla, wrote, “Bisma Rehman, so sorry that this is happening, but I’m confident you’ll land on your feet! Hiring you was the best move for the NACS program, and any company would benefit greatly from having you on their team. I’m happy to put in a good word wherever I can."
In April, Reuters reported that Tesla is planning to lay off more than 10 percent of its global workforce. This massive lay-off is not just affecting junior employees but also senior executives. On April 15, two top executives at Tesla announced their departure. Drew Baglino, the former senior vice-president of powertrain and energy engineering at Tesla left after 18 years, whereas Rohan Patel, Tesla’s vice president for public policy and business development, left after 8 years.
