The criteria for reimbursement is met when rain duration exceeds 120 cumulative minutes within any 4-hour block of time during daylight hours.

In Singapore, there’s an average of 171 days of rain each year. However, a hotel in the Lion City is taking a risk to ensure that rain doesn’t ruin the vacations of its guests. InterContinental Singapore is offering a “Rain Resist Bliss” package, promising to refund one night of a guest’s stay if any of their scheduled activities are affected by rain.

Andreas Kraemer, the hotel’s general manager, shared with CNN that during a conversation with a group of friends about the future of luxury travel, one of them jokingly suggested that being able to ensure good weather would be the ultimate luxury. This sparked the idea for a rain insurance package.

However, there are conditions attached. The InterContinental won’t be handing out refunds every time it rains. According to a statement from the hotel, the criteria for reimbursement is met when rain duration exceeds 120 cumulative minutes within any 4-hour block of time during daylight hours.

The rain insurance package is exclusively available to guests staying in suites, with rates starting at 850 SGD (Rs 52,000) per night for junior suites and 4,500 SGD (Rs 2.7 lakh) for the presidential suite. Guests receive the reimbursement in the form of a voucher, which must be utilised at the InterContinental Singapore within six months. The voucher amount corresponds to one night’s stay in the respective room category.

As for Kraemer’s preferred activities on rainy days in Singapore, they include exploring the Asian Civilizations Museum, embarking on a tour of Tiger Brewery, and indulging in some shopping at the local Kinokuniya bookstore.

Special packages like these can indeed help established hotels differentiate themselves from competitors. For instance, in Bali, a hotel implemented a ban on smartphones and other electronic devices by the pool to promote relaxation and unplugging.

Similarly, hotels and resorts worldwide, such as the Park Hyatt New York, have introduced special rooms focused on providing guests with an ideal night’s sleep. These rooms feature amenities like white noise machines, weighted blankets, and soothing teas, catering to guests seeking a restful and rejuvenating experience.
