Paan Stains Inside Electric Lift At Bhopal Railway Station Annoy Internet
Several furious social media users slammed and criticised the commuters for the reckless attitude.

Lack of civic sense is quite evident among the people these days. The reckless attitude of the citizens is mostly visible at the public places. Despite conducting numerous awareness programmes on a large scale, the situation remains the same. Now, a picture of an electric lift stained due to paan (betel) and gutka (tobacco) spitting in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhopal railway station has captured the attention of online users. The picture was first shared by a Reddit handle. The caption on the now-deleted post read, “We don’t deserve good things. We lack civic sense and are absolutely disgusting.” The particular photo has been widely circulated on different social networking sites. The red stains and smears of tobacco in the lift are visible.

As soon as the picture was shared, several furious social media users slammed and criticised the commuters. An X (Formerly Twitter) user, Deepak Kumar Vasudevan, reported it to Railway Seva and also asked for an explanation from the concerned authority. The post read, “An elevator (aka) lift at Bhopal railway station? Swachhta Pakhwada.”

Sharing an update about the complaint he made, Vasudevan said he received a call from the Bhopal DRM office. “Got a call from Bhopal DRM office acknowledging the issue which was also found by their folks on patrol. They have got the maintenance team to clean the same,” he mentioned.

On the other hand, reacting to the viral picture, a user wrote, “I keep repeating this. We Indians do not deserve nice things.” Another commented, “When some people spit their paan/gutka/ or anything else, the rest of the people should raise their voice and make these people clean this. They’ll learn by that only, not by posts.” An account remarked, “Terrible.”

It is estimated that the Indian Railways spends around Rs 1,200 crore and gallons of water every year to clean the stains and marks caused by spitting on its premises, especially by pan and tobacco users.

Presently, littering and spitting on Railway premises or using the toilet when the train is on the platform costs violators Rs 500, as per the LiveMint report. Meanwhile, the railway has set up a few vending machines or kiosks at different stations to provide the spittoon pouch for as little as Rs 5 to Rs 10 to maintain cleanliness around.
