In Pics: ISS Captures Paris In All Its Glory As 2024 Olympics Kickoff

With an unprecedented four-hour opening ceremony held along the Seine River, Paris held its first Summer Olympics on Friday. The inaugural event was staged outside of a stadium for the first time. This exciting tournament included almost 6,500 competitors from 206 nations. Meanwhile, two images of Paris from space were released by the International Space Station (ISS). It showed the city all lit up after the Paris Olympics 2024 opening ceremony.

Sharing pictures, ISS captioned the post, “The City of Light. Paris, where the 2024 Olympics just kicked off, dazzles in these nighttime photos taken from the International Space Station.”

The post has over 25,000 double taps on the social media platform.

Athletes from about 200 nations paraded down the river on boats led by Greek delegates to kickoff the tournament. As many as 117 athletes from India will compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Of the 32 sports included in this Olympic Games edition, 16 will be contested by competitors from India. On the opening day of contests on Saturday, the nation was all set to begin its campaign in hockey, badminton, shooting, tennis, rowing and archery.

Over 10,000 competitors representing more than 200 countries will compete for gold, silver, and bronze in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. From now until August 11 in Paris and 16 other locations in metropolitan France (plus one event in Tahiti), 329 events across 32 different sports will make up the competition.

The inaugural Paris Olympics were held in 1924, and this year will be the sixth Olympics to be hosted in France (three Summer Games and three Winter Games). It will also be the 100th anniversary of that event.

At the Paris Summer Games, with 593 competitors, the United States will field the largest national delegation. In 31 of the 32 sports on this year’s Olympic schedule, Team USA will field at least one contender. France, the host country, comes in second with 573 contenders.
