A woman has sparked an online debate after claiming she wouldn’t wash her hands after using the toilet in her own home. Summer, who posts online as @thesummeredeen, regularly posts about her life in Nashville, Tennessee, and has built up a large following. A recent video posted to TikTok has divided fans. “Do you wash your hands after using the bathroom in your own home? I really hope I’m not outing myself”, she said in the video. “If everyone’s doing that and I’m the only one not doing it. But no, I’m not. I’m not going to wash my hands in my own home. One or two or three. I’m not going to do it”, she added. The woman also shared that there are public toilets where she feels like washing her hands after using the toilet, but she would be making it even more dirty because she would be touching all the things on the faucets, especially in her own home as it is ridiculous.
She even admitted that she sometimes pretends to wash her hands by turning on the faucet so that others in the house can hear. When using the bathroom, you come into frequent contact with your hands, such as turning the door handle, lifting the toilet lid, cleaning, and flushing. Each of these interactions puts your hands in contact with germs.
According to CWS, there are an estimated 200 million types of bacteria on your hands after using the bathroom. If you don’t wash your hands with soap and water, you can spread these germs to anything and everyone you touch. Proper hand hygiene eliminates dust, viruses, and bacteria, preventing the spread of disease to others and surfaces around you. This reduces the spread of illnesses like food poisoning, flu, or diarrhoea.
The NHS website states that you should wash your hands after using the toilet, changing a nappy, handling food, blowing your nose, sneezing or coughing, treating cuts, or handling animals, including pets, their food and after cleaning their cages.
