99-Year-Old Chinese Man, Who Promised To Give Home To Colleague In Exchange For Care, Goes Back On His Word
A Shanghai-based elderly man agreed to give his home to a colleague in exchange for his care and companionship, but now he changed his mind after remarrying.

A 99-year-old man from Shanghai, China, is facing backlash after changing his mind about a property promise he made years ago. Tan agreed to give his home to a colleague, Gu, in exchange for his care and companionship. The elderly man said he no longer got along with his children and would not leave the house for them. The deal was made before he decided to remarry when he was 93.

Now, Tan regrets his decision and wants to leave the property to his new wife, instead. Despite his attempts to cancel his agreement with Gu in court, the judge rejected his request. As per the South China Morning Post, the Chinese court decided that Gu would receive the property as originally agreed after Tan’s death.

Tan promised to give his property to Gu in 2005 under certain conditions. He asked him and his family to keep in touch regularly, visit him on a weekly basis, buy him clothes and groceries, and care for him when he was sick. In return, Tan mentioned that Gu, and not his children, would inherit his flat and everything in it. Tan even acknowledged that Gu provided more care and support than his family, and made his life better.

During that time, the 99-year-old also signed a contract with Gu to sell his flat for 200,000 yuan (approximately Rs 23 lakh). The report didn’t specify the size of the flat, but in 2005, the average price per square meter in Shanghai was around 6,700 yuan (approximately Rs 79000), according to the Shanghai Statistics Bureau. Although they had a contract, Gu did not initiate the payment and Tan did not move out of the flat. When Tan remarried in 2018, he regretted his decision to sell the property.

Between 2019 and 2021, Tan reportedly sued Gu multiple times, claiming he wasn’t aware that his property had been transferred in his colleague’s name and even asked to cancel the contract. In response, Gu demanded Tan leave immediately and pay rent starting in 2006.

To prove his points, Gu also presented messages and photos from his family, showing they spent time with Tan during family trips. Gu also mentioned that Tan stopped communicating with him after 2019.

Meanwhile, the court sided with Gu and passed the verdict that Gu would take the home, once Tan dies.
