More than 200 experts, speakers and 29 member countries will participate in the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in New Delhi from December 12 to 14, which will focus on Artificial Intelligence’s ethical, regulatory and development dimensions.
The prestigious event will be hosted by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
Abhishek Singh, IAS, President & CEO of the National e-Governance Division (NeGD) at MeitY, in an exclusive interview with News18, said GPAI comprises four specialised working groups: Responsible AI, Data Governance, Future of Work, and Commercialisation and Innovation. These groups, consisting of numerous experts and scientists, are actively engaged in projects that significantly impact all stakeholders in the AI field. So India, as the chair of GPAI, recognised the need to amplify awareness about the pivotal efforts within these working groups.
“In the past few months, webinars were conducted where experts detailed their endeavours. These webinars witnessed significant participation, with over 500 attendees globally, showcasing widespread interest in these crucial AI domains. As a follow-up to these informative sessions, the GPAI Summit will spotlight these projects, aiming to further raise awareness about the significant contributions made by experts across these essential areas,” he explained.
Regarding India’s strategic approach to leveraging the GPAI Summit, Singh articulated the nation’s stance: “We will maintain a balance between innovation and regulation to ensure AI solutions are developed without causing harm.” He stressed India’s approach as resonating globally, steering discussions in influential forums such as the G7, G20, OECD, UN, and the recent AI Safety Summit held in the UK.
Singh shared insights into India’s ambitious plans for the Summit, highlighting a massive AI Expo showcasing over 150 start-ups across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, manufacturing, robotech, and drones. This platform is expected to serve as a testament to India’s commitment to harnessing AI for societal advancement while maintaining a robust regulatory framework.
Furthermore, the GPAI Summit aligns seamlessly with India’s national AI strategy, stressing responsible AI deployment, safety, security, and trust in AI systems. Singh reiterated India’s dedication to forging partnerships, signing ministerial declarations, and bilateral meetings aimed at fostering global consensus on AI governance and innovation.
He also said: “Deepfake will be one of the issues that will be addressed during the summit.” While explaining why this discussion is needed, Singh said this sophisticated technology poses challenges worldwide, prompting various countries to adopt diverse strategies to combat its adverse effects. According to him, discussions during the summit will focus on deliberating, sharing insights, and collectively formulating standardised protocols to effectively manage and address the challenges posed by Deepfake technology.
So, it is now understood that with India steering the GPAI chairmanship, the Summit signifies a pivotal moment poised to shape a more inclusive, ethical, and impactful global AI landscape.
