The machine for making chapathis in the district jails would be purchased through open tender.‘’New machines are now available in the market which require minimum human effort. We are planning to purchase such machines through open tender,’’ said ADGP Prisons, Alexander Jacob.The new chapathi-making units would be set up in the background of the good sales of chapathis made at Poojappura, Viyyur and Kannur central prisons. The chapathi-making business is turning out to fair source of revenue for the department.The initiative, started in Central prison, Poojappura, six months ago, has till date generated an amount of Rs 2 crore.‘’Rather than the income, the more noteworthy factor is that the government has doubled the daily wages of prisoners who are assigned in the chapathi-making unit,’’ said Alexander Jacob.   On an average, around 35,000 chapathis are being sold from Central Prison, Poojappura, 12,000 are sold from Viyyur and around 8000 are sold from Kannur.A packet of five chapathis and chicken curry costs only Rs 25, whereas a plate of vegetable curry with chapathis costs Rs 20. Around hundred prisoners are engaged in making chapathis and 20 for preparing curry in Poojappura Central Prison alone and almost the same number are engaged in the task in the other two central prisons.‘’As chapathi-making has been telecast  even by national television channels the public are well aware that they are being made in hygienic conditions,” said the ADGP.  The chapathi-making will soon be followed by the making of ‘iddli’ and ‘sambar’ and the sanction for the same was got three days ago.first published:January 01, 1970, 05:30 ISTlast updated:January 01, 1970, 05:30 IST
