Apple Rolls Out iOS 17.2 With New Journal App And Spatial Video Support: Details Here
Apple has rolled out its iOS 17.2 update with a host of new features, particularly tailored for the iPhone 15 Pro models. Read on to know what's new.

Apple has finally rolled out iOS 17.2 for supported iPhones today. This version brings forth a slew of promised features, including the new Journal app and the ability to capture ‘Spatial Video’ for the Apple Vision Pro headset coming in early 2024. This update is available for all iOS 17-supported iPhones. That means if you have an iPhone XS or later, you should be good to go.

iOS 17.2: What’s New

Apple’s Journal app is designed to make it easy to document your daily life on the go. And while it isn’t revolutionary, what it does better than most journaling apps is that it directly shows “Moments” from your iPhone data, which includes photos, locations, and even workouts. This makes it easy to add these events to your journal.

On-device machine learning provides private, personalised suggestions to inspire journal entries, and customizable notifications help users develop their writing habits. With the new Journaling Suggestions API, third-party journaling apps can also suggest moments for users to write about,” Apple notes.

Moreover, users can also choose to enable secondary authentication, and lock the Journal app with their device passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID. And, per Apple, all Journal entries are “end-to-end encrypted when stored in iCloud, so that no one but the user can access them.”

Another major feature that iOS 17.2 brings, particularly for the iPhone 15 Pro models, is the addition of a ‘Translate’ trigger for the Action Button. Now, you can set the button to trigger Translation; this could be handy for someone who’s usually dealing with people from multiple demographics.

Apart from this, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max now even let you shoot Spatial Video, which is essentially a 3D video that you record from the wide and the ultra wide lens on your iPhone simultaneously to be played in the Apple Vision Pro headset that launches next year.

To capture Spatial Video, you need to first enable the mode in camera settings, and then in Camera app, choose the Video mode, rotate iPhone to landscape orientation, tap the spatial video icon, and then tap record. Apple mentions that “iPhone starts recording video from both the advanced Main and Ultra Wide cameras, and scales the field of view from the Ultra Wide camera to match that of the Main camera, which is then saved into a single video file.”

But it’s worth noting that the Vision Pro is essentially a US-only product in the beginning; so, it can’t be said how useful this feature would be for most users who won’t have access to the headset.

How To Download iOS 17.2 Update

Firstly, you need to have a supported iPhone. If you already have iOS 17—that means you can get this one as well. Next, you need to head to Settings > General > Software Update. Here, you need to tap on Download and Install. But before you begin ensure you have a solid connection, and your battery is above 50-60% so that your update process goes smoothly.
