Indian Super League (ISL) team Mumbai City are set to take on Iran’s Nassaji Mazandaran in the first game of their AFC Champions League (ACL) 2023-24 campaign. The two teams have been placed in group D alongside the likes of Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal and Uzbekistan’s PFC Navbahor Namangan. It will be the first time that the two sides will collide. Both teams will be eager to amplify their chances of qualifying for the next round by securing a win on Monday.
Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune will host the league clash on September 18. The ACL is one of Asia’s premier football competitions. It is governed by the Asian Football Confederation. The first edition of the competition was first played in 1967.
Mumbai City are making their second straight appearance in the competition, having won the 2022-23 ISL shield. They failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the ACL in 2022 after finishing second in the group stage. However, Mumbai look promising this season after roping in Indian left-back Akash Mishra and a seasoned Spanish defender Tiri. The Indian football club has also signed a Dutch attacking midfielder Abdenasser El Khayati to strengthen their squad ahead of their ACL game.
FC Nassaji Mazandaran, on the other hand, will be competing in the ACL for the first time. They recently won the annual cup competition in Iran, popularly known as the Hazfi Cup.
