Agartala: Expressing concern over possible tampering of old Electronic Voting Machines, the opposition Congress in Tripura has requested the Election Commission to conduct the coming assembly elections with new foolproof Electronic Voting Machines (EVM).

Prominent Congress Leader and former Chief Minister Samir Ranjan Burman in a letter on Friday requested the Chief Election Commissioner, "It is our earnest request that the Commission may kindly arrange for conducting of the coming assembly Election in Tripura with new foolproof Electronic Voting Machines with in-built mechanism against any tampering attempt".

The next assembly election in the state is due in February 2013.

"We have repeatedly brought to your notice that there are grave risks of tampering old Electronic Voting Machines particularly when they are kept under the custody of the Election Department of the state and handled by members of Tripura Government Employees Co-Ordination Committee, a frontal Organization of the ruling CPI(M) party", he said

Burman said the Electronic Voting machines should be kept under the safe custody of the District Returning Officers "away from the clutches of pliable employees, so that there is no scope of tampering."
