Kolkata: Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday slammed the Mamata Banerjee government saying he hardly found any governance in the state as crimes against women were steadily going up and the state failed to attract any investment.
The state was steadily going downhill for lack of political will and policies and programmes for development on the part of the government, the Left leader alleged. "It is very difficult to understand if any government is running in the state, rather it's a club. It is better to speak less and less about the functioning of the government," Bhattacharjee told a party function to observe 124th birth anniversary of the CPI(M) Founder leader Muzaffar Ahmed.
He alleged that attacks against women had surpassed all records and observed this could have been arrested had there been any political will on the part of the ruling coalition.
"Attempt to shield any crime or disruption of law and order is due to lack of political will of the government", Bhattacharjee observed.
He said the government had failed to attract any investment and there was not a single proposal to set up industry in the state.
"Infosys is yet to decide on investment, while there was no proposal for investment in the steel sector after the agreement with Jindal's for a big one at Salboni. Not a single employment opportunity has been created in IT sector during last one year," Bhattacharjee said. "With poor people in the villages losing jobs and the workers having no emloyment opportunity, the progress of the state is under tremendous pressure," he said.
The CPI(M) leader stressed the need for getting back into the fold the section of people, who had lost faith in the Left parties "due to our mistakes", to counter this 'dangerous' government.
Observing that socialism was the last word in the world, Bhattacharjee wondered how capitalists like the US, which failed to manage itself, would help Indian economy recover.
Even President Pranab Mukherjee in his speech had admitted that the trickle down theory had failed to work in India, he said.
"I don't know if it is criticism or self-criticism, but the fact is that appeasing a handful of rich could never bring welfare to the state," he said.
Speaking on the occasion, former industry minister Nirupam Sen said, "The success Left Front Government achieved in 34 years with the decentralisation of power has been reverted to total centralisation of power in one person, which is a most unfortunate sign in the state".
CPI(M) state secretary Biman Bose slammed the Mamata Banerjee government for attacks on opposition party workers and their party offices.
Condemning the attack on a party office in Durgapur on Sunday, Bose said under the Mamata Banerjee government's rule, 74 party workers had been killed in 623 attacks in the state. 12 party workers were even forced to commit suicide.
