New Delhi: BJP on Thursday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's statement that Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) was dabbling in policy issues was "unwarranted and deeply regrettable" and maintained that most of the conclusions of the auditor had turned out to be correct.
"The Prime Minister in his comments to the editors has made a most unwarranted comment against the CAG that he is commenting on policy issues. This is deeply regrettable," BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
"Singh has become the first Prime Minister to criticize the CAG," he added.
Prasad maintained that since Singh has vast bureaucratic and governmental experience, he would surely know that the manner of implementation of policy can be examined by the CAG and there is a whole constitutional process about its preparation and acceptance by Parliament.
"In the case of 2G licences, the CAG has examined very serious infirmities and irregularities in the implementation of the policy of allotment. Most of its conclusions have been found to be correct in CBI investigation which is being monitored by the Supreme Court," Prasad said.
"This is a serious matter concerning probity and propriety in our governance. To publicly castigate the CAG is condemnable," Prasad said.
Taking digs at the Prime Minister, he said "you have criticised the opposition. Now, you are criticising the media.
Whoever is critical of you becomes the object of your ire. The country is grateful that you have spared the Supreme Court."
He alleged the Prime Minister was not "firm and credible" in his actions.
