Thiruvananthapuram: After Congress leader Shashi Tharoor supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'Swachh Bharat' campaign, the Congress in Kerala has recommended disciplinary action against the former minister.
The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) is miffed at Tharoor after he said he was honoured to accept PM Modi's invitation to join the Swachh Bharat campaign. They have said that his style of functioning is unacceptable.
The unit has sent a report to the party High Command and left the final decision to them. The Kerala Congress has slammed Tharoor for continuously praising PM Modi. "His style of functioning is not acceptable to the KPCC as well as to the party workers of Kerala so we decided to send a report immediately," KPCC President VM Sudheeran said.
However, Tharoor defended himself saying that his remarks were misinterpreted and that he is not in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Tharoor said that the Congress state unit has not bothered to understand his stand. "No one from Kerala Congress contacted me even though they have the numbers. I wish they had bothered to understand what I was trying to say. We should not be seen as opposing Gandhi's principles instead Congress should have taken the initiative," he said.
Tharoor also said that he "will oppose Swach Bharat campaign if it's reduced to a day old photo opportunity. As politicians we have to think of India and not be reduced to narrow politics."
