Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee injured himself on Tuesday after he smashed a glass water bottle following an argument with former Calcutta High Court judge and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Abhijit Ganguly.
According to the details, a heated exchange between the two took place during a meeting of the Joint Committee on Waqf Bill.
Banerjee broke the water bottle kept at his table and injured his thumb and index finger. He also attempted to throw the same towards the chairman’s desk.
Soon after, Banerjee was taken for medical aid, wherein he received four stitches to his hand.
Banerjee was suspended for one day and two sittings under rule 261 and 374(1)(2) of the Lok Sabha for his words against the Chairman of the Committee, Jagdambika Pal and for his behaviour of throwing a broken bottle at the Speaker.
As many as 9 votes were cast in favour of the motion, moved by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, to suspend Banerjee and eight against.
Voting happened on the same and the BJP lead. NDA scored nine votes and the opposition got eight votes.
Later, a video shared by news agency PTI showed the moment when Banerjee was being taken back to the meeting room by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Sanjay Singh.

The committee, chaired by BJP’s Jagdambika Pal, was listening to the views of a group of retired judges and lawyers when the opposition members questioned what was their stake in the bill.
BJP leader Agnimitra Paul said it is absolutely disgraceful to see a sitting MP like Kalyan Banerjee resorting to such “violent” behavior.
“His actions of injuring himself with a glass bottle in a fit of rage during a discussion about a respected former Calcutta High Court Judge, Abhijit Ganguly, now a BJP MP are beyond unacceptable. This kind of unrestrained aggression sets a dangerous precedent, especially for someone in public office who should be an example of composure and responsibility. How can we expect law and order in West Bengal when leaders themselves are engaging in violence? This is yet another reflection of the deeply embedded culture of lawmakers and impunity under Mamata regime. The people of Bengal deserve better than a party whose representatives behave so recklessly,” she said in a post on X.
