The Delhi office of the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPI(M)) allegedly received calls late on Sunday night threatening General Secretary Sitaram Yechury for his support in the protests at the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Receptionist at the office Deepak Kumar said that from 10.30pm to 1am they received threat calls where the caller allegedly said "He is wrong in what he doing, he should leave the country (Yechuri sahi Nahi Kar hain, unhe Desh chhod Dena chahiye)." The caller is also believed to have abused on the phone.
The caller addressed himself as a Aam Aadmi Balveer Sena member. A complaint at Mandir Marg police station has been given and police has put the call on surveillance.
Meanwhile, students at the Jawaharlal Nehru University are on strike demanding release of Students' Union President Kanhaiya Kumar, who will be produced in a Delhi court on Monday. Scores of JNU students formed a human chain and raised slogans on Sunday, demanding that sedition charges against Kanhaiya Kumar be dropped.
Kumar was arrested earlier this week in a case of sedition and criminal conspiracy filed over holding of an event at the varsity against Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's hanging during which anti-India slogans were allegedly raised.
On Sunday, Home Minister Rajnath Singh unleashed a political storm with a claim that the event at JNU had received "support" from LeT founder Hafiz Saeed. Soon, Opposition parties demanded that the Home Minister provide proof to back up his claim on the event at the JNU campus. Rajnath's comments came two days after a series of tweets, purportedly by Saeed, had appeared under a hashtag asking Pakistanis to support the agitation in JNU. Police are investigating as to whether the twitter handle actually belonged to the LeT founder.
