Rajkot: Congress leader Indranil Rajyaguru, who is contesting the upcoming Gujarat elections against Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in Rajkot West, was detained by police late on Saturday following a scuffle with BJP workers.

The clashes broke out when BJP workers allegedly tried to remove Congress posters in the constituency ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city. Rajyaguru and his brother Dipu Rajyaguru tried to stop the BJP workers, leading to a brawl.

A badly injured Dipu was rushed to the hospital, while Indranil Rajyaguru — the richest candidate in Gujarat elections — was detained by police. A video of Rajyaguru being hauled into a police van went viral within hours of his detention.

Rajkot continued to be on the edge following the incident as thousands of Congress supporters flocked to the district police headquarters to protest against Rajyaguru’s detention.

Rajkot West goes to polls in the first phase of elections on December 9. The constituency has been a prestigious seat for the BJP, with PM Narendra Modi winning his first-ever election from the constituency in 2002. The seat is also important given the presence of 75,000 Patidar voters in the constituency. The Congress is banking on this bloc to help Rajyaguru topple Rupani.

Rajyaguru has declared assets worth Rs 123.78 crore, emerging as the richest candidate in Gujarat elections, a report by Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and Gujarat Election Watch said.
