Varanasi: Drawing parallel to mythical character of Lord Ram who went on a 14-year exile, Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday hit back at the BJP for calling him a "deserter", and said he quit the Delhi chief minister's post to uphold principles of sacrifice.
"Many people say that I have quit and call me a 'bhagoda' (deserter). I left it as it was matter of principles," he said addressing a rally at Benia Bag in Varanasi.
Mocking the party, he said that the BJP would not have spared Lal Bahadur Shastri who resigned as rail minister or Lord Ram who went on a 14 year exile and would have also called them as 'bhagoda'.
"The then Railway Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri had to resign in wake of a rail accident. It was god's grace that the BJP was not born at that time or else they would have said he was an escapist.
"Lord Ram was sent to exile by his mother for 14 years. Everyone supported him then, if the BJP existed then, they would have said God Ram is an deserter," he said.
Challenging the BJP to make any of its members resign from a panchayat seat, he said the party did not know "what is sacrifice" or the "politics of principles".
"Why would I leave the chief minister's seat if I was greedy? I had to leave the chief minister's seat because the Congress and the BJP together didn't allow my Lokpal Bill to be passed. Hence I quit. Congress and BJP keep calling me a 'bhagoda'," he said.
Kejriwal also took on Modi for his reported comments that being a single there was no reason for him to be corrupt and said it was unfair to convey an impression that men indulge in corrupt practices because of their wives.
