Congress manifesto promises full statehood for Delhi, cheap electricity, better security
With both BJP and Aam Aadmi Party promising a reduction in electricity bill, the Congress too has done the same.

New Delhi: Delhi will become a full fledged state, its residents will have cheap electricity and better security according to the Congress election manifesto released on Friday. Renewing its demand for full statehood "for effective governance without any shackles" in Delhi, the Congress is the first party to release the manifesto for the February 7 Assembly elections in the national capital.

Similar promise was made by the Bharatiya Janata Party during the 2013 polls but according to its chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi, full statehood for Delhi is no more a central issue for the party.

With both BJP and Aam Aadmi Party promising a reduction in electricity bill, the Congress too has done the same.

Following the footsteps of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress proposes to have more power distribution companies giving Delhi residents the option of choosing thr service provider. Modi had made a similar proposal in his January 10 rally in the national capital.

"Those who consume power upto 0-200 units would be charged Rs 1.50 per unit while those who consume power above that would be given 50 per cent discount by reigning in the private companies," the manifesto said.

The issue of corruption which led to the fall of the Congress-led UPA in 2014 and its worst ever performance in the Lok Sabha elections, however, found mention on the last page of the manifesto.

The document was released by the AICC Delhi incharge PC Chacko, campaign committee chief Ajay Maken, Delhi Pradesh Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely and chairman of the manifesto committee AK Walia. All 70 candidates attended the event.

The party also plans to increase the number of colleges, schools; increase in pension amount; installation of more CCTV cameras in colonies, buses; regularisation of unauthorised colonies; no charge for sewer connection among others

The manifesto also highlighted the work done by the Congress government in Delhi during its 15-year regime and the UPA government in 10 years. The BJP is likely to release its manifesto after January 26.####
