Cong undermining CAG authority, BJP tells Pranab
LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Sushma Swaraj met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention in the coalgate controversy.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday took the battle over the coal blocks allocation controversy to the Rashtrapati Bhawan as a delegation of the party met President Pranab Mukherjee.

Senior BJP leaders LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj met President Pranab Mukherjee seeking his intervention.

The BJP asked the President to advise the Congress party to not question the authority of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

Following the meeting with Mukherjee, Advani said, "Our battle against corruption will continue inside and outside Parliament. We have asked the President to intervene as the authority of a constitutional body is being weakened and undermined."

Reacting to the move by the BJP, the Congress raised doubts on the timing of the BJP's opposition, saying that the party was raking up controversy with an eye on Assembly polls in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh later in 2012.

The Congress party also pointed fingers at the allocation of a coal block to Gadkari aide and BJP MP Ajay Sancheti in a single bid, leading to loss in crores.

Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said, "Ajay Sancheti, BJP MP and close aide and business partner of Nitin Gadkari has been given coal block in single bidding while no allocations are done in single bidding leading to losses in crores. Ask BJP how this was allocated in single bidding?"
