New Delhi: Gearing up for Assembly elections in some key states and also possible General Elections sometime next year, the Congress on Wednesday reshuffled three state units of the party, sending key Cabinet ministers as heads of pradesh Congress committees in West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh.
Union Ministers Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, Suresh Pachouri and Saifuddin Soz were all appointed pradesh Congress committee presidents of their respective states. They are all key ministers in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's ministerial council.
These changes suggest that a Cabinet reshuffle is likely very soon.
While Dasmunsi will look after West Bengal, Pachouri and Soz are being sent to Madhya Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir respectively to strengthen the party setup in their states ahead of the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.
Dasmunshi is the I&B Minister in the Manmohan Singh Cabinet, while Soz holds the Water Resources portfolio and Suresh Pachaury is the Minister for Personnel Affairs.
Both Jammu and Kashmir and Madhya Pradesh are going to polls this year. Former minister Ajay Singh has been named the chairman of the campaign committee in Madhya Pradesh.
The names of the new PCC presidents were approved by Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi in consultation with the general secretaries in charge of the States.
