New Delhi: Bihar Assembly Speaker Uday Narayan Choudhury on Sunday recognised Nitish Kumar as the leader of the JD(U) Legislature Party. Party leaders will meet the Governor Keshari Nath on Monday again to decide the course of action.
But, current Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi is not taking this lying down as he is in Delhi and will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the evening to discuss the political situation and demand special status for Bihar, said sources.
Manjhi could also seek support from the Bharatiya Janata Party to stay in power.
Sources said state BJP leaders Radha Mohan Singh, Nand Kishore Yadav and Sushil Modi met Manjhi aides Narendra Singh and Mahachander Prasad on Saturday night at Bihar Niwas.
The development took place after 97 JDU MLAs unanimously elected Nitish to be Leader of the House. Without much support from his own party, the options before Manjhi are limited and he is likely to resign soon.
He can also go for a cabinet expansion inducting 30 new ministers or he can send the proposal for dissolution of the Assembly. But any floor test would be a challenge because Manjhi doesn't have the requisite support within his own party.
Manjhi is in the national capital to attend the first meeting of NITI Ayog which will be chaired by PM Modi to seek suggestions for better coordination between Centre and states.
