Titabor: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi may have kept his immediate family members out of public eye for the last 10 years, but this time he has posted his son at his Titabor Assembly constituency to be in touch with the electorate.
Confident of retaining his constituency for the third consecutive term, the senior Gogoi has hit the campaign trail last week, after undergoing an operation in New Delhi, and was busy concentrating on other seats leaving his 28-year-old son Gaurav at Titabor.
Fresh with a Masters Degree in Public Administration from New York University, Gaurav is attracting a lot of attention wherever he goes. Gaurav, who had spent his childhood in New Delhi with his father being an MP for five terms and an Union Minister twice, has launched door-to-door campaigning and addressed a few political meetings on behalf of his father.
"I have come here to know my people and establish a bond with them, from whom I have stayed away for long," Gaurav said. In the run-up to the current assembly polls, he first made an appearance with his father at a press conference in Guwahati where the chief minister denied his son was joining politics but "was only here to get a feel and understand the electoral scenario of the state".
"He will not move with me but travel far and wide with other Congress leaders to understand how the election procedure in the state works," he had said.
The Chief Minister had always maintained that his son and daughter Chandrima, an MBA and also in the United States, are not interested in joining politics.
Asked whether he was keen on joining politics, Gaurav said, "I am into social work and will continue to do so."
He also expressed confidence that his father would win and the Congress would return to power "as Assam had witnessed tremendous development during the last 10 years."
"The perception of people about the state has changed outside and with development taking place, they are keen to come here," Gaurav said. People of the constituency are also impressed. Seventy-year old Damayanti Gogoi said about "innocence and integrity of the young boy who also appears very gentle".
Gaurav was present during the filing of nomination papers by Tourism and Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain. He was earlier seen in public in Assam during the swearing in of his father as Chief Minister in 2001 and 2006.
