New Delhi: Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party has a clear majority in MCD polls, its Muslim candidates — 5 out of total 272 seats — have lost. Congress has emerged as winner on these seats.
The BJP’s decision to field 5 Muslim candidates in Delhi came after it didn’t give a single ticket to Muslims for Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. Despite this, the party had managed to win many Muslim-majority seats.
The Muslim faces of Delhi BJP were Kuwar Rafi form Zakir Nagar, Sartaj Ahmed from Chauhan Banger, Sabra Malik from Mustafabad, Famudin Safi from Delhi Gate and Rubina Begum from Quresh Nagar.
Congress spokesperson Abdul Rasool Khan said the BJP’s loss in these key areas can be attributed to its “fight for symbolic nationalism” and “the communal attacks on the Muslims across the country.”
“BJP is now vouching for symbolic nationalism, which is only a gimmick. Secondly, these communal incidents that are happening across the country, where minorities are attacked, have certainly created a dent in BJP’s campaign. PM Modi talks about development, but the poor is being beaten up…. their actions show that they do not want Muslims. This will be evident in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections where people will understand that secularism and coexistence is extremely important,” said Khan.
Muhammad Ali Khan, another Congress spokesperson, said, “These areas where BJP had fielded Muslim candidates were essentially Congress strongholds, hence this verdict was expected. Fielding Muslim candidates from these areas was an extremely superficial act and was mere tokenism. Look at what a top BJP leader said recently that Muslims have been given sanctity under them, these statements, are nothing but tokenism.”
“I have data to prove that Muslims never vote for BJP, then how can one assume that they did so during the MCD elections. The 10% who really vote should question themselves as to why do they do so,” said the RSS leader.
