2G scam: Karuna's wife seeks exemption from appearing as a witness
Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal had been named in the CBI's second chargesheet in 2011 as a prosecution witness.

New Delhi: Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, a crucial witness in the 2G spectrum allocation scam, on Monday approached Supreme Court (SC) seeking exemption from appearing as a witness in the case on medical grounds. Dayalu said that she is suffering from Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Dementia, hence cannot travel to Delhi.

The CBI had submitted a list of prosecution witnesses to be called for recording of their statements in the case before Special CBI judge OP Saini. According to the list, Dayalu had been named in the CBI's second chargesheet in 2011 as a prosecution witness. As promoters of Kalaignar TV, Dayalu had 60 per cent and her daughter had Kanimozhi 20 per cent stake.

Kanimozhi, is facing trial along with former telecom minister A Raja among others. Besides Raja, Sharad Kumar, former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's erstwhile private secretary RK Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Limited MD Sanjay Chandra, three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) - Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair - are facing trial in the case.

Directors of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal and Bollywood producer Karim Morani are also accused in the case. Besides these 14 accused persons, three telecom firms - Swan Telecom Pvt Ltd (STPL), Reliance Telecom Ltd and Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Ltd - are facing trial in the case.
