Chennai: The nominations of Congress candidate and TNCC chief K V Thankgabalu's wife Jayanthi Thankgabalu and a PMK contestant were among 1,153 rejected on Monday during scrutiny of papers filed for the April 13 Assembly elections. Nomination papers of 4,228 candidates were taken up for scrutiny and among them, 1,153 nominations were rejected for various reasons, an Election Commission statement late on Monday night said.
In total, 3,082 nominations were found to be valid and were accepted subject to final verification scheduled on Tuesday, it said. Jayanthi's nomination was rejected as he had not signed the papers and also did not provide full details of her assets.
Thankgabalu, who had filed his papers as a dummy for his wife in Mylapore constituency, claimed himself as the official candidate, though the high command had not given him ticket. There had been a series of protests by sections of Congress workers against the nomination of Jayanthi and a few
others.
The nomination of PMK candidate N Sadhasivam in Vedharanyam constituency was also rejected as he did not provide details of his assets in the required format, officials said. As a result, R Chinnathurai, who had filed the nomination as a PMK dummy candidate, has become the official nominee of the party in the constituency.
The nominations of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi contesting from Tiruvarur, AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa (Srirangam) and DMDK founder-leader Vijaykant (Rishivandhiyam) were among those found to be in order.
Chennai topped in the maximum number of candidates in a district with 294 in fray while Tiruppur (North) with 70 nominations recorded the highest number of contestants in a constituency.
Meanwhile, a total of 273 nominations were found in order at the end of scrutiny of papers filed for the April 13 elections to 30-member Puducherry Assembly. Of the 378 nominations filed, as many as 105 were rejected during the scrutiny of papers for the constituencies spread over Puducherry (23), Karaikal (five), Mahe and Yanam (one each) regions.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 30 and the final list of candidates would be announced on that day, the statement said.
