Former Indian captain Virat Kohli was left ‘astonished’ as Shubman Gill rediscovered his form by smashing a fifty against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday, November 2.

After Rohit Sharma’s early dismissal, Virat and Shubman rebuilt the Indian innings, scoring an 189-run stand. En route to smashing his second World Cup fifty, Gill played a lofted shot, which was slapped away for four that left Kohli stunned.

The cameras caught Virat Kohli’s reaction from the non-striker’s end, the 34-year-old was mighty impressed with the display of brutal aggression from the Indian opener.

The incident happened on the third ball of 15th over of the Indian innings, Dilshan Madushanka delivered a back-of-the-length delivery angling across to Gill who responded by dancing down the pitch and whacked the ball through covers for a boundary.

Earlier, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis had won the toss, and he elected to bowl first. Indian captain Rohit started his inning with a four but was dismissed on the next ball, getting castled by Madushanka.

Virat thus joined Gill, and the duo were kept under the cosh for a while by Sri Lankan bowlers but they steadied the ship.

Both Gill and Kohli were dropped earlier in the inning, and they would end up punishing Mendis and Co. by hitting their respective fifties. Virat neared in on his 49th ODI century, a record which would see him go level with Sachin Tendulkar for the most hundreds in the format.

Virat and Gill’s partnership crossed the 150-run mark and India were in cruise control of the fixture against Sri Lanka. A win at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai would see the Indian team seal their place in the semifinals of the ODI World Cup 2023.

Gill would end up getting dismissed on 92, he narrowly missed out on his maiden World Cup century when the youngster was caught behind on Madushanka’s last ball of the 30th over of Indian inning.
