The IMD said that this is the first intense western disturbance of the season and will influence northwest and central India till October 17
Rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and snowfall have been predicted in several parts of India, such as Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Delhi, over the next two to three days due to an intense western disturbance. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Saturday issued an orange alert, warning of heavy rains and snowfall, for some hill states till October 17.
The weather department also said that this is the first intense western disturbance of the season and will influence northwest and central India till October 17.
Here are some key updates on weather conditions across the country:
- In its release, the IMD said light to moderate rainfall is likely to happen in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Lakshadweep till October 16 as a cyclonic circulation lies over south Tamil Nadu and neighbourhood in lower tropospheric levels.
- A cyclonic circulation has developed over central Pakistan and neighbouring regions under the influence of the western disturbance. It is likely to intensify further with the possibility of merging with a fresh western disturbance on October 15, the IMD said, leading to rainfall in northwest India.
- Punjab is also likely to witness heavy rainfall on October 16 under the influence of the western disturbance.
- Thunderstorms and lightning are predicted in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, west Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Rajasthan during this period.
- Dry northwesterly winds from the Himalayas are likely to prevail over northwest India in lower tropospheric levels after the passage of the western disturbance. As a result, temperatures are likely to fall by two to four notches from October 17 over the region.
- There is a possibility of light rain at isolated places of Rajasthan such as Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Phalodi, Ganganagar, Hanumangarh and Churu on October 15, the IMD predicted.
- Light, moderate to heavy rainfall is predicted by the IMD over Andaman and Nicobar Islands also till October 18.
- Goa and Maharashtra are likely to experience precipitation till October 16, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
- People have been advised to check for traffic congestion on routes before leaving for their destination, follow all traffic advisories, avoid going to waterlogged areas, and avoid staying in and around vulnerable structures in view of expected thunderstorms.
